Yelmer Buurman with race Win to Championship title

UBBERGEN (October 14, 2018) - The battle for the championship title in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, probably the most important GT championship in the world, was only decided during the last race of the season, the three-hour race at the Circuit de Barcelona - Catalunya in Montmeló, Spain. The victory in the race was for driver Yelmer Buurman and his teammates in the Black Falcon -Mercedes-AMG GT3, the Germans Maro Engel and Luca Stolz, enough to claim the title. "We had to work very hard for it in the race, so the satisfaction is even greater," Buurman said afterwards. However, the title win is still pending the outcome of a appeal case.

With a total of 53 registered car ' s competition was during the final round of the five races Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup particularly strong. After the season high, the 24 Hours of Spa at the end of July, Yelmer and his teammates came second in the standings to the final game in Spain. There, Yelmer, Maro and Luca provided the team with the best possible starting position by claiming the pole position in qualifying.

"At the start of the race, Maro kept the lead and that turned out to be the key to success," said Yelmer afterwards. “Initially we were able to make a nice gap, partly because the rest of the field was stuck behind a car, which kept things going. After Maro, Luca took over the wheel and during his stint there was a 'full course yellow ' (neutralization, ed.), Which was quickly converted into a safety - car phase, bringing the whole field back together. I got in for the final stint, but just after we made our pit stop, there was again a 'full course yellow ', which gave teams who stopped at that time an advantage because they lost relatively less racing time. So I was in second place for a moment, but after the restart I quickly regained control. Then there were three more 'full course yellows', followed by safety cars, but I was able to hold off the attacks and defend our position, so that we were ultimately flagged as the winners. We certainly did not receive it as a gift!”

With the victory in Spain, Yelmer and his teammates are champions in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, the most highly regarded international GT competition. "An achievement that we can all be extremely proud of," said Yelmer. "This is my first motorsport title, after separate successes such as both wins in the 24 Hours of Dubai in 2015 and this year, also with Black Falcon ."

Afterwards, the race management reported that the winning Black Falcon -Mercedes-AMG GT3 from Yelmer and his teammates had been taken out of the results due to a piece of tape under the hood. Yelmer: “A detail in which there is no benefit whatsoever. That is why the team has appealed against this decision. ”Until a decision is made in the appeal case, the result remains provisional.”

For Yelmer, the racing season is not yet over: he is in any case still participating in one of the remaining races in the German VLN long- distance championship at the Nürburgring and the 24-hour race at the Circuit Of The Americas in Austin, Texas, mid November.
