Blown engine ruins Yelmer's run for the pole
01-09-2012
Yelmer and Michael Bartels will start the qualification race at the Moscow Speedway from the eleventh and last place on the grid. In the first qualifying session the engine of the BMW Z4 blew in a big way.
Things looked good for Yelmer and Michael Bartels, despite the ten kilo’s extra the Z4 hade been ‘rewarded’ after their successful weekend at the Slowakia Ring. Yelmer showed great form clocking second fastest time in free practice. In the first qualifying session he started rather easily, knowing that he and Michael would surely qualify for the second session. He then set off for a single fast lap, recorded the fastest time in the first sector, followed by a very fast second sector. But then the engine suddenly blew in a big way. In a cloud of smoke Yelmer coasted to the pits with flames leaking from under the bonnet. It was the fresh engine the team had build in at the Slowakia Ring. As a result, Michael Bartels will start tomorrow’s Qualification Race as the last of only eleven GT1 cars that will take part in this event.
